Flaming Skull (NO, these will never get old!)

Streaking across our Saturday is TW Brown with this recent skull sketch of two of my favorite things, skulls and flames!

The first thing that pops to mind is one particular cut of SLAYER's many, many kick ass tracks that mentions certain death "Screaming From The Sky ". I think you'll agree that this is quite the appropriate image. Thanks for sharing it, TW!

We asked our readers to submit their own skulls using the template that was provided, then we faced them off against each other, and we now proudly present for your viewing pleasure, the final results.

This skull is by Rachel Stoltz of Anatomical Element. She was so inspired by the template, that she used it to make several jewelry skulls. This skull is made with copper and aluminum with steel rivets. Rachel lives in Chicago, IL and was a great help in making the show successful.

Mr. Four Fingers from London, England, made this skull called "Masquerade of the Dead". He explained this is a pen illustration finished digitally.

Every year we do Skull Appreciation Day, we invite our fans to participate in some way. This year, for the Face Off show, we invited the fans to use the same template that the show artists used. We got lots of great submissions. Noah combined the fan submissions in the same split manner that the show work was created. We are featuring all the fan submitted Face Off pieces, as well as the artists from the show.

Face Off: Skull-A-Day Co-editors' Skull

Since the Skull Appreciation Day 2013 Face Off show opens tomorrow, we're giving you a sneak peek at the skull we created for the show. This skull was created by Abby "Azurafae" Davis (top left), Justin "Tatman" Lovorn (top right), and Noah Scalin (bottom). Noah digitally matched up the sections to create the final piece.

My skull quarter was inspired by the decay of nature. I used some of the plentiful fallen azalea flower from my neighbors (per their permission), bare ground of my garden, and unused play sand. There might be an inchworm hiding among the flowers. I used sand buckets to collect the flowers, and a sand shovel to arrange the sand.

Justin explained that his skull is "my simple tribute to Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman who just passed away. My love of skulls goes hand in hand with my love of metal and I wanted to remember him in the most appropriate way I could think of."

Noah revisited his ornamental skull from year one. He rearranged the ornamental pieces, to fit the skull template, so his half would line up with our quarters.

Want to see some more Face Off skulls in portion (and meet Noah, Justin, and me), head to the International Museum of Surgical Sciences in Chicago, IL for the opening on Friday, May 31, 2013 from 5pm-9pm. Honey Skull

I love seeing amazing digital work that is highly detailed. The shading really helps define the honeycomb and skull shape. The details of the bees makes the really appear to live on this unusual hive. I love the taste of honey. One of my favorite ways to enjoy honey is when it's still on the honey comb. I fondly remember go to the state fair and buying honey combs thick with delicious fresh honey. The glistening honey of this skull makes me want another right now!

I love a site that gives visually creative people the ability to put there designs on a product. These wallets are made of Tyvek which is a very durable material, one of my favorites! For people that carry wallets, you know the woes of a wallet that doesn't withstand daily use. These are not only durable, but a beautiful way to carry around many things you need daily. They are reasonable priced for a wallet, and part of that money goes back to the artists, which is wonderful.

"Shayne Of The Dead" Skulls

'Shayne of the Dead' is an artist and professional Bon Vivant. He tries to do a 'skull-a-day' on his phone everyday and was kind enough to share two great and totally different pieces with us.

I'm not sure who the first bloke is supposed to be, but Mr. Peanut won't get out of my head.  Luckily the multicolored, tripped out skull group snaps me back to my own little reality.  Such great work is being done these days with technology that is still so new.  I wonder what Michelangelo would have been able to do with a Wacom tablet?  Thanks for sharing your awesome stuff, Shayne!

Terrifying Skulls

Clay Kasserman created two mixed media skulls. He explained, "They start as pen and ink drawings that I scan and then finish with Photoshop."

These remind me of horror movies I should have watched before bed. You know the kind with melting faces and dead people becoming alive again. I feel like these could eat my brains in one chomp...or just give me nightmares for weeks.

Scott's Saturday of Several Different Skulls

Scott Middlehurst has been here before with this symbolic illustration, and now he's back with a diverse set of new skulls in all different mediums.

Scott knows how to keep his creativity flowing by switching up his game(love the hobo nickel).  He's a prime example of how even one person can do so many different works of the same subject.  It's almost like some kind of theme for a skull art blog I know of.......  Thanks again, Scott!

Galactic Skull

Ashraf Ali aka The Drawing Beard from Swindon UK created this skull artwork.

I love looking up at the stars and admiring the constellations at night, and the watching the cloud formations during the day. We live on a very beautiful planet in a gorgeous solar system, so of course artwork inspired by this, interests me. If I saw a skull appear in the sky, I would be intrigued. This skull reminds me more of a light symbol similar to Batman's. Sort of makes me want to figure out how to make that happen at night. "Warrior of Fate"

Like the chief of a demonic tribe this "Warrior Of Fate" commands attention and demands your soul! Todd Holtz used a combination of airbrush and digital art in creating this magnificent beast that would render any mortal man paralyzed with fear.

I almost want to equate this to some sort of Native American/Predator alien kind of collaboration, but I don't think that would be exact, nor do I want to diminish Todd's endeavor to be unique.  I love seeing the dark side skulls come out to the light.  Thanks for sharing yours, Todd!

Double Faced Girl

Simone Ewenz aka Haascore created this girl with a half skull and half fleshy head.

Of course, we all have skulls and skeletons below our fleshy exterior. However, this speaks to the duality of life and death. We could ponder what the point of our lives are, when death is inevitable and our ends are unknown. Instead of going down a philosophical path, do what you can in your life to make yourself happy. When you're happy, your perspective is brighter and you cast positivity on others. Live a way that makes you happy, and you will truly live. Life is too short not to.

Pink Skull

Luba Diduch said "This started off as a drawing that I made using a medical illustration book for reference. I used a drawing tablet to do the main drawing, then employed magical digitization tools to 'pinkify' it."

It's neat to know a little about the process of turning a hand drawing into a digital drawing. I like the stitched and "pinkified" qualities of this images. It makes the skull seem like it was broken and stapled back together, while getting dirty along the way.

"Villian" Skull

Northwest Pacific art styles are great for their bold characteristics. Animals are often the focal points, but this human skull set within makes me think of a werewolf.  Thanks for the great submission, Julien!  

Odoskull

Nick Newton from Calgary, Alberta Canada, created an odosketch of a skull.

odosketch is a site I hadn't come across before, but it's fascinating. It's a bit like drawing with light markers, and takes some time to master, as the color goes from small to large the faster you sweep it. The amazing thing about it, is that once your sketch is complete, you can watch the playback of how it was created. This is a great tool for digital doodling, and something that I'm going to let my daughter sketch on. To see Nick's skull being created, view it here.

Rocking Skull

Felipe Raveau Drouilly made a poster for his friends in the rock band LA BIG RABIA from Santiago, Chile.

I love the pairing of an anatomical skull with the design overlaps and radiating eye design. The combination definitely draws me in, which is fantastic for a band poster. The band's music is rather good and deserving of a skull poster! You're lucky to have a talented friend to create this great poster for you all!
