410. Ornamental Skull III

HAPPY SKULL APPRECIATION DAY! In honor of the FACE OFF: Skull-A-Day vs Street Anatomy exhibition that opened this past weekend in Chicago I created a brand new Ornamental Skull using the template we provided for artists...

[BONUS] 409. The Visible Skull

I created this skull from the pieces of a vintage model kit called The Visible Head...

It was made specifically for the Skull Appreciation Day 2013 exhibition FACE OFF: Skull-A-Day VS Street Anatomy at The International Museum of Surgical Science. As part of the show we asked the participating artists to use a provided template to create a new digital work, that we could cut apart and recombine with other artist's work. Vanessa Ruiz, my co-curator, and I thought it would be fun to take the challenge as well, so I made this piece as my homage to Vanessa's blog Street Anatomy, which is interested in anatomical art that goes beyond just the image of the skull. You can see how our pieces looked mashed up on the poster for the show...

[BONUS] Cross-Stitch Skull In-Use

EJ Justice in Georgia, use Noah's 258. Cross-Stitch Skull to needlepoint a Christmas gift for a dear friend.

We received this submission a while ago, but it got lost in the shuffle of regular submissions. She mentioned at the time of submission, "Now I'm looking for an old clock or barometer, with a convex glass face, that we can use to frame it for the appropriate amount of leer." I'm hoping she found that, as it would give an extra eeriness to it!

[BONUS] Skullphabet #1 In-Use with Woodwork

This font and the Skullphabet #2 are very intricate. I'm impressed that she carved her name using this font, into wood. The painting is also very precise and gives a nice contrast, so the font elements...letters and skulls...stand out.

[BONUS] Paint by Numbers Skull In-Use

Anne Williams Gilardi of Pompton Lakes, NJ, used Noah's 167. Skull By Numbers to paint this skull.

This is a great painting! This is probably one of hardest available projects. I haven't see many people attempt it, so congrats to Anne for completing it well!

Elegant Universe

League of Space Pirates (the band featuring Skull-A-Day founder Noah Scalin and co-editor Abby Davis) has a brand new video for the song Elegant Universe that of course features some lovely futuristic skull imagery...



The video was directed by Georgiy Kuznetsov and the song is also included on the beand new Book & Record comic book/vinyl single from the band.

[BONUS] 408. Recycle or Die

I was recently asked to visit the University of Wyoming in Laramie, to give a talk about my work and as part of my visit I agreed to create a new skull installation with the students of the graphic design department...

I was given access to the large lobby of the new Department of Art building and it was decided that I would work with a material that was plentiful in the building: paper. Specifically paper that had been collected for recycling purposes (including the posters announcing my talk previous in the week).

The piece was created anamorphically (in the spirit of Hans Holbein's The Ambassadors) so that it only looks correct from one spot in the room (in this case on the landing of the staircase between the lobby and 2nd floor). It measures 19'-3" x 7'-4" (5.8 x 2.2 meters).

The piece is a temporary installation that will of course be recycled after it is dismantled. Thanks to all of the students who skipped class to help me out and especially to my host Jenny Venn for suggesting it!

[BONUS] 407. Skeleton Damask

I was recently offered a chance to create a temporary mural installation in the Loo Gallery at the wonderful Lamplighter Roasting Company here in Richmond, Virginia.

The Loo Gallery is actually their bathroom and each installation is painted over when the next artist creates their piece!

I decided to create a new wallpaper damask style pattern using only the bones of the human skeleton. I had previously created a smaller wallpaper pattern as part of my original Skull-A-Day project, but I had never done something so complex.

Since the end result was so large and complicated it required two 18" x 24" stencils to create one complete section of the pattern.

I had my friends at BIG SECRET laser cut two sets of the stencils out of thick, flexible mylar and I worked with them in rotation, since they would quickly start dripping from the layers and layers of metallic spray paint I was putting on them.

The installation took three days – or rather nights, since I was coming in after hours to give the toxic fumes a chance to air our before customers would arrive in the morning – to complete. Of course I wore a Bane-style ventilation mask the entire time so that I wasn't breathing in the fumes either...

The piece will be up for the next month or so, so if you're in the Richmond, Virginia area please stop by Lamplighter and check it out in person!

And who knows, maybe this will get turned into actual wallpaper one day, like my Ornamental Skull wallpaper at Designer Wall Coverings & Fabrics.

When I'm not making skulls I'm working on a my music/art project League of Space Pirates (whose logo is of course a digitized skull & crossbones) and I thought you might like to know about a few exciting things we have in the works...

[BONUS] Papercraft Skulls In-Use

Melanie Church is "a librarian at Greenlease Library at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, MO. I found your papercraft skull online and thought it would be perfect for the spooky side of our fall book display. The student assistants who work at the circulation desk had a lot of fun making these. They were an even bigger hit than the hand-turkeys we made the week before."

We love seeing the Papercraft Skull being used! This festive Autumn display of papercraft skulls, origami frogs, much approved scary books, and other seasonal artwork is great! I'm glad the student assistants enjoyed making them and the response was so good.

[BONUS] In-Use Skull Desktop Wallpaper - Google Chrome Theme

Ian Anderson used our Skull Desktop Wallpaper from #32. Interlocking Skull, to make a Google Chrome Theme in our honor. The theme can be found here, where you can install it if you use Google Chrome.

As a user of Google Chrome, I love seeing this as a theme. I hope some of you find this one handy, or learn how to make your own.

[BONUS] Skull Stencils In Use

Over the past few months, lots of you all have been submitting In Use photos of Noah's stencils. Here is a round up of those submission.

Antti Siitari from Finland, used the #9 Skull Stencil on the amp for an electric guitar.

 Marty Busch also used the #9 Skull Stencil. He explained, "I've used the skull stencil on a lot of stuff, really killer stencil! But last month (June 2012) I used it among other stuff on the doors of my '49 Ford F-1 pickup. Built it from scratch... Used the skull, with the lettering on one, used same but different stencil for star - it's all spray paint. Took about 3 hours with an xacto knife to cut both out, but check it out! Turned out good."

Russell Jones used the #9 Skull Stencil on a t-shirt. He "took a short class in screen printing and here is a couple of photos of one of the t-shirts I made.  Kind of prototype at the moment but I think they came out ok."

Avery Dennis used multiple stencils to decorate a skateboard (skullboard?). He used the #9 Skull Stencil, #232 Stylized Stencil Skull, and #38. Quoth the Skull cut out.

Jessica Boudreaux used the #232 Stylized Stencil Skull to adorn a t-shirt.

Stacy Asher, Wisconsin said, "I loved the 'I Heart Skulls' stencil (Skull Appreciation Day Stencil) that you put out over the summer. I had been looking for the perfect place to put it when I realized that I could combine my 2 favorite things. Making quilts and collecting skulls. So this was my result."
