Heart Skull

Illustrator, Joanna Carrero apparently loves(hearts) skulls as much as we do. Enough to give her heart design it's own set of skulls. A beautiful design combining the symbols of life and death into one.  A lovely idea at that.  Thanks for sharing it, Joanna!

Skelly Heart

Misty Benson, Creator of the Morbidly Adorables™ told us: "I've been following Skull-A-Day since you started the 365 project. It's one of my favorite sites!  I painted this piece called 'My Skelly Heart.' An 8"x10" acrylic on canvas painting, this is for those with a skelly, or skully, heart! Some hearts
bloom with flowers, others bloom with woe, my heart blooms with skellies."

Tattooed Leather Skulls

Over in the UK Dionne Marshall is mixing styles with her "tattooed and tooled leather" works of art. She uses untreated natural veg tan leather which she decorates by tattooing individually(with a tattoo machine) before tooling, embossing, engraving, etching & repousse onto the leather. Dionne gets her inspiration from the artistry & imagery of modern tattooing, mixed with a never ending love of skulls, geometry(the first and noblest of sciences), Japanese, lines & patterns.

This is just a sample of the plethora of awesome skulls in her etsy store. Obviously I'm a huge fan of tattoos, but I've never seen anyone use a tattoo machine on leather. The results you achieve are amazing, Dionne. The tooling and embossing add so much depth to the colored lines. Tattoos are forever and well taken care of leather lasts a lifetime so these pieces could be around for eons. Thanks for sharing your artful works of perseverance, Dionne!

Faux Decayed Skull

Eben C. O'Connor from Seattle, WA created this skull. He explained, "Here is a photo (actually scanned face down on a flatbed scanner with black cloth over) of a sculpture I did a few years back. Cast in plaster with epoxy, liquid latex, egg-tempera paints, and a sterling filigree heart found within the walls of an old house renovation."

This skull reminds me of horror tales. It looks partially decayed and haunting. Since the filigree heart is from a home renovation, this skull makes me think of all those stories of ghosts and supernatural occurrences at homes when they are renovated or built on burial grounds. The spirits are disturbed and skeletons start coming out of the ground... ok, enough of the terrifying stories. I hope this creepy beauty doesn't give you any bad dreams.

Bow Skulls and Heart Bones Nails

Kelli King wanted to make her nail art skulls fun and different, so she gave them bow. "Whoever said skulls had to be scary never put a pink bow on one."
